12 / 13 · Understanding Cholesterol Numbers
Understand What the Laboratory Measures
- Total Cholesterol — the total amount of cholesterol carried by different lipoproteins in the bloodstream.
- LDL Cholesterol — the amount of cholesterol carried within LDL particles.
- HDL Cholesterol — the amount of cholesterol carried within HDL particles.
- Triglycerides — a measure of triglyceride concentration in the blood.
- ApoB — a measure reflecting the concentration of atherogenic lipoprotein particles, where testing is available.
Laboratory results need to be interpreted alongside metabolic health, family history, age and individual circumstances. Extended fasting, major weight changes, illness and other physiological conditions can affect lipid results. A repeat result under comparable conditions can help distinguish a persistent pattern from a temporary change.
ONE BLOOD TEST IS A SNAPSHOT.
NOT THE WHOLE MOVIE.
